TREE COMMISSION
In 1953, an Ordinance was created and later amended in 1983 to establish a Tree Commission. The Commission has nine members including Chairperson, Chip Patterson. Other members are; Trustee Clay Bridgewater, Susan Keiser, Mark Miller, Dave Bird, Erv Thatcher, Fran Peden, Norma Weir, and Gary Walton. The mission of the Commission is to maintain and preserve or improve trees, shrubs, and plantings in the City of New Castle. All trees located in the Public Right of Way, i.e. Sidewalk, are the property of the City of New Castle. Residents interested to have a tree planted should contact the Tree Commissioner, Chip Patterson at 323-2332 or by email pattersonc@erols.com. Plantings are normally done twice per year depending on the budget. Donations for tree plantings are encouraged but not required. Research is now being done on other town's tree ordinances to ensure that New Castle's ordinance is current. There is some interest to broaden the participation in this Commission and this will be evaluated. Thank you to each of the Commissions for their volunteer service and commitment to enhancing the beauty of our City. For more information about this Commission, please call Chip Patterson or email your Council President, Chris Castagno at CastagnoCJ@aol.com

NEW ENTRANCE WAY VISION
The City limits were expanded to Route 13 along Route 273 with the annexation of the Farmers Market area recently. Interested residents, Mary Davis and Jane Miller have approached DelDot and your City Government with a vision to create a new entranceway to the City in that area, in a similar way that was done in Greenville. Considering the planned construction of the Quigley Boulevard light and entrance way to the Farmer’s Market (scheduled to begin in April 2002), contact was made to the Secretary of Transportation to incorporate this vision into the construction plans. Meetings will be scheduled in the coming months to discuss the possibilities. For more information, please call or email your Council President, Chris Castagno at CastagnoCJ@aol.com or your City Administrator, Bob Martin at 322-9801.

PLANNING COMMISSION HEARS GRAY STREET PLAN
The first phase of the long awaited development of the Deemer Steel property was reviewed and voted on by your Planning Commission. A recommendation will be made for Council’s consideration for the minor subdivision of the Gray Street/Deemer Steel parcel for the construction of 12 town homes. Builder, Chick DeAscanis was present to answer questions about the project. Drainage, easements and maintenance issues are still in question but are expected to be finalized in the coming weeks. For more information, please email your Planning Commission Chairperson, Stan Sykora at stsykora@aol.com or call your City Administrator, Bob Martin at 322-9801.
